The Northern Jacana is a medium-sized wading fowl with lengthy legs and toes which might be well-suited for strolling on floating vegetation. It has a darkish brown physique with a black head and neck. As well as its invoice has yellow patches and its brow has a yellow wattle. Its invoice has a white base. When a jacana is in flight, its yellowish-green major and secondary feathers are seen.(from Birds of the World)
SIMILAR SPECIES
In adults, yellow 3-lobed frontal defend and pale-bluish or greenish-white base of higher mandible distinguishes Northern Jacana from Wattled Jacana, which has pink 2-lobed defend and outstanding rictal or wattles at both facet of gape (missing on Northern Jacana).
DISTRIBUTION
PERSONAL OBSERVATION ANECDOTES
A really distinctive wanting shorebird with enormously lengthy toes and a stunning chestnut physique. I’ve seen many of those within the Yucatan, Belize and Guatemala. In Costa Rica we noticed them first alongside the Tárcoles River, and once more on the Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat close to Sarapiqui.
