Pura Vida Birds and Birding – Least Sandpiper – Reflections of the Pure World

LEAST SANDPIPER(Species Account Weblog #65)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

Least Sandpipers are the smallest of the small sandpipers often known as “peeps”—not a lot larger than a sparrow. They’ve distinctive yellow-green legs and a high-pitched creep name. Search for them on edges of mudflats or marshes, the place they stroll with a hunched posture and probe for little crustaceans, bugs, and different invertebrates. This widespread however declining shorebird migrates 1000’s of miles between its arctic breeding grounds and wintering grounds as far south as Chile and Brazil. (from Birds of the World)

In all plumages, distinguished from Western Sandpipers by total browner (darker) look, smaller measurement and shorter legs, shorter invoice, and yellowish legs (however mud could cover colour). In nonbreeding plumage, could also be confused with different equally sized sandpipers (Western Sandpiper comparability beneath), however whiteness of plumage (particularly white face) separate out the Western.

In Costa Rica we noticed Least Sandpipers whereas on the boat tour on the mouth of the Tárcoles River.
