Non-invasive optogenetic stimulation of distinct stress responses in crops

  • RESEARCH BRIEFINGS

Two ion channels (constructions in cell membranes that permit ions to go via) have been genetically engineered to disclose the stress responses of crops non-invasively. When triggered by mild, one channel provoked responses to osmotic stress (attributable to water scarcity) and the opposite induced immune responses to biotic stress (similar to wounding or a pathogen).
