NEOTROPIC CORMORANT – Pura Vida Birds and Birding – Reflections of the Pure World

NEOTROPIC CORMORANT(Species Account Weblog #77)

TAXONOMIC TREE:  

  • ORDER: Suliformes,
  • FAMILY: Phalacrocoracidae,
  • BINOMIAL NAME: Nannopterum brasilianum

The Neotropic Cormorant has a black physique. Immatures have darkish brown breast. Orange facial pores and skin comes to a degree and is bordered by skinny white line. Smaller, longer-tailed and shorter-legged than Double-crested Cormorant. Dives underwater to seize fish. Typically perches with unfold wings to dry them out. Most widespread species of cormorant from Mexico south. (from Birds of the World)

Typically happens with Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum), particularly in winter, and is typically confused with that species. Physique measurement, and form and coloration of gular pouch are most dependable distinguishing marks within the subject

In Costa Rica we noticed Neotropic Cormorants close to the Chilamate Rainforest EcoRetret and whereas on the boat tour on the mouth of the Tárcoles River.
