FERRUGINOUS PYGMY-OWL(Species Account Weblog #99)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

  • ORDER: Strigiformes,
  • FAMILY: Strigidae,
  • BINOMIAL NAME: Glaucidium brasilianum

The Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl is a everlasting resident from the southwestern United States to southern South America, occurring in tropical, subtropical, and chilly temperate lowlands (sea degree to 1,400 m in the USA and Mexico; to 1,900 m in Central America). Colour varies from rusty to grayish general, however all coloration varieties have tremendous whitish streaks on crown (not spots) and quite a few, slender darkish tail bars. It occupies all kinds of ecosystems, from semiarid desert scrub to lush tropical rain forest. (from Birds of the World)

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl is much like members of the Northern Pygmy-Owl group (Northern Pygmy-Owl G. gnoma; Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl G. costaricanum; and Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl G. nubicola), members of that are related in dimension and form to Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, and should have an analogous variety of pale bars on the tail. As is the case with many members of the Least Pygmy-Owl group, all species within the Northern Pygmy-Owl group sometimes happen at larger elevations than Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. These species even have small pale spots on the crown, not the slender pale crown streaks of Ferruginous. The place their ranges overlap in North America (e.g., Arizona), Northern Pygmy Owls (G. gnoma) even have fewer tail bands which can be normally whitish (not rufous and darkish brown, typical of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl in U.S.).

In Costa Rica we noticed 10 Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls, principally at Punta Leona and once more at Lodge Robledal in San José.
