Areas of chromosomal DNA referred to as centromeres are essential to dividing cells. Centromere sequences from a human genome have been absolutely characterised and in contrast with these from different people and non-human primates, revealing dynamic and speedy patterns of mutational change that may enhance understanding of centromere evolution and performance.
