BARE-THROATED TIGER-HERON(Species Account Weblog #79)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

  • ORDER: Pelecaniformes,
  • FAMILY: Ardeidae,
  • BINOMIAL NAME: Tigrisoma mexicanum

The Naked-throated Tiger-Heron is a big however quite short-legged, primal-looking heron of mangroves and freshwater marshes in tropical lowlands. Usually in areas with bushes, but in addition round ponds in quite open marshes. All plumages have bare yellow throat pores and skin (not all the time straightforward to see), greenish legs. Grownup has grey cheeks, finely barred plumage, and rusty thighs; immature is boldy barred blackish and heat brown (therefore the title ‘tiger-heron’). (from Birds of the World)

It’s distinguished from the Fasciated Tiger-Heron by its black cap, yellow face and throat, and vermiculated brown (chestnut) neck.

In Costa Rica we noticed Naked-throated Tiger-Herons close to the lowlands round Punta Leona, whereas on the boat tour on the mouth of the Tárcoles River and close to the Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat.
