COLLARED PLOVER – (Species Account Weblog #59)
TAXONOMIC TREE:
- ORDER: Charadriiformes,
- FAMILY: Charadriidae,
- BINOMIAL NAME: Anarhynchus collaris
Collared Plover is a typical tropical and subtropical shorebird distributed broadly from Mexico south into the northern half of South America. Although it’s discovered alongside the coasts and estuaries, Collared Plover is considerable on the sandy shores of enormous rivers inland. It is a small plover, pale brown above and white under, with a black and white preocular space, chestnut crown and nape, black breastband, and yellow legs. (from Birds of the World)
SIMILAR SPECIES
The same Snowy Plover (Anarhynchus nivosus) is paler, lacks an entire breastband, and has darkish legs.
