The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) is a good-looking, small/medium-size hummingbird of humid tropical lowlands. Favors forest edge, second development, gardens in some areas. Feeds low to excessive and sometimes involves feeders. Will be tough to tell apart from Buff-bellied Hummingbird, which favors drier habitats. Rufous-tailed has a dingier, grayish stomach and extra in depth rusty on the tail, which lacks the distinct fork typically proven by Buff-bellied’s tail. Additionally evaluate Cinnamon Hummingbird. OBSERVATION ANECDOTES
My private “Lifer” Rufous-tailed Hummingbird was close to Calakmul in Campeche MX, not removed from the Belize border. Since that first one, it has been probably the most generally seen hummingbird in my travels by way of Belize, Guatemala and Costa Rica. We actually noticed a minimum of one every single day and at each location in Costa Rica, from Rancho Naturalista to the Arenal Observatory and close to Sarapiqui.
